Because our team members are one of our most important differentiators, we want to give you a chance to get to know what makes them special. Our latest spotlight is on Chad Sexton, assistant superintendent. Prior to joining our team in 2020, Chad spent five years working as an electrician for commercial projects.

Continue reading to learn more about Chad, including his advice to professionals interested in working in the construction industry, a recent client award he earned and his favorite part of WMG’s culture.

Tell us about your background and role at WMG.

I joined WMG in early 2020, right as the pandemic began. I provide support to our clients and specifically focus on logistics planning, strategic coordination and trade management for our client, Austin Commercial, one of the largest, most diversified builders in the U.S. Prior to joining the team, I spent five years as an electrician and one year dedicated to the Delta Project at Terminal 1 and 2 at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

What certificates and degrees have you earned that help you perform and lead?

As part of my role, I’m OSHA 30 and CPR-certified. I’m also currently working on my Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STSC) certification, which, after passing a test, is given to professionals whose roles help prevent harm to people in the workplace. Most recently, I earned the Advantage Builder Award from our client, Austin Commercial, for my contributions to both the team and the overall LAX logistics plans.

What’s been the most rewarding part of your job?

There have been many rewarding parts of my job, but I really enjoy learning new aspects of the construction industry from our knowledgeable and seasoned team of professionals. I’m able to take what I've learned and apply that knowledge directly to client projects.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Ever since I can remember, I’ve always loved history. That said, I wanted to be an archeologist when I grew up.

How would your colleagues describe you?

My colleagues would describe me as hardworking, knowledgeable and proactive.

Share a lesson you’ve learned during your time with WMG.

Communication is key, especially when working with a team.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone looking to get into the construction industry?

It’s so important to be prepared and show up on time for work. It may seem small, but it makes a big difference. Not being afraid to ask questions goes a long way in this field, so don’t hesitate to speak up.

What’s the best part of WMG’s culture?

I enjoy the close-knit culture of our small (but rapidly growing) company. Accessibility to my direct leader is important, and I appreciate the open-door policy that allows me to reach out directly when needed.

What advice would you give your 21-year-old self?

I’d tell myself to find a niche in the construction industry and see where it takes you. You never know where you’ll end up!

What’s your favorite travel destination?

While I haven’t had the opportunity to travel to many places in my life, I recently went to the Grand Canyon and it was awe-inspiring.
